Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) was established by the Canadian Government in 2008. The program was created to retain and attract world-class doctoral students by offering them a reasonable financial award to help them during their studies at Canadian colleges and universities.
Vanier scholars rewards leadership skills and a high-standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities or health-related fields. Scholarship beneficiaries receive $50,000 yearly for 3 years. Once the program is fully implemented, it will support up to 166 scholars yearly.
The Vanier CGS program assist Canada’s colleges and universities to attract excellent doctoral students from across Canada and worldwide. These promising scholars help create an innovative and dynamic environment on Canadian higher-education campuses. Vanier scholarship may also be referred to as “Rhodes scholarship of Canada”.
Vanier CGS Programs are administered by Canada’s 3 federal research granting agencies (the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council [SSHRC]), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research [CIHR], and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council [NSERC]).
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships nominees are accessed by agency-specific multi-disciplinary peer review committees.
Vanier Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
Ensure that you and your nominating institution meet all the requirements below before you apply for a Vanier CGS. Nominations that do not meet all of the requirements will be considered ineligible.
Candidate Eligibility
- Citizens of Canada, resides permanently in Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships.
- Candidate must be nominated by only 1 Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships quota.
- Be aiming to obtain your first doctoral degree (including joint graduate research program such as: DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MD/PhD). It is paramount to note that, only the PhD portion of a joint-degree is eligible for funding;
- Intend to pursue, in the academic year following the announcement of results or summer semester, full-time doctoral (or a joint-graduate research program such as: DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MD/PhD) research and studies at the nominating institution; for joint-graduate research program, only the PhD portion is eligible for funding.
- Have completed no more than twenty months of full time study in their doctoral program as of 1st of May, 2023;
- The doctoral program would start upon the completion of your Master’s program. The duration of study completed are calculated from the doctoral registration date.
- Have completed no more than thirty-two months of full-time study in their doctoral program (i.e. joint-graduate research program, accelerated, fast-track), by 1st of May, 2023 if:
- Registered in a joint-graduate research program, e.g., MA/PhD, DVM/PhD, MD/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the thirty-two month window whether or not they were previously registered in a Master’s program:
- The duration of study are calculated beginning from the date on which an applicant is officially enrolled in the joint-program (including the Master’s portion of the program).
- Expedite directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (not previously registered in a Master’s program);
- The duration of study completed are calculated from the doctoral registration date.
- Expedite (Fast-track) from a Master’s degree program into a Doctoral program without acquiring the Master’s degree.
- The duration of study completed are calculated from the original Master’s registration date.
- Have acquired a first class average, as determined by your college or university, in each of the last 2 years of full-time study or its equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the college or university for its definition of a first class average; and
- Must not be a recipient, or have been a recipient of a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC to complete or undertake a doctoral program.
Eligibility Of Program Of Study
An eligible doctoral program is required to include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a dissertation, thesis, major research project, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert reviewed at the higher-educational level as mandated for the completion of the program.
Joint-graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MD/PhD), also clinically oriented programs of study, such as; clinical psychology, are eligible programs if they have a significant sovereign research component, as described above.
It is important to note that, ResearchNet will only permit the creation of one application per applicant.
Applicants should only seek a nomination from the college or university at which they want to study and are advised to discuss their decision with the nominating college or university before they submit the application through ResearchNet.
Eligibility To Hold A Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
With no exceptions, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships is tenable only at the eligible Canadian institution that submitted the nomination.
Below are the requirements to hold the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships.
- The candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student at the nominating Canadian university or college and be pursuing a doctoral program (or joint-graduate research program MSc/PhD, MA/PhD, or MD/PhD); and
- The candidate must not be currently holding an appointment from his/her faculty with a Vanier Scholarship unless a leave of absence from the appointment is arranged
- The candidate must remain registration and show continued satisfactory progress in their doctoral program.
- The candidate must not be a recipient, or have been a recipient of a doctoral level scholarship from NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC to complete or undertake a doctoral program.
- The candidate must not be concurrently holding any other NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR training award.
How To Apply For Vanier CGS Program
Follow the steps below to apply for the Vanier CGS Program:

Step 2. Contact your desired nominating college or university
Step 3. Register for CCV and ResearchNet accounts
Step 4. Create CCV and link to ResearchNet application
Step 5. Start yout ResearchNet application
Step 6. Identify your area of research
Step 7. Identify participants
Step 8. Identify referees
Step 9. Enter degree information
Step 10. Enter proposal information and upload required documents
Step 11. Attach other application materials
Step 12. Confirm documents sent
Step 13. Preview application materials
Step 14. Consent and submit application
Step 15. Presentation standards for attached documents
Upon submission of your application to the nominating institution, the activity on your portal will move to “Completed Activities” tab. You will not be able to make any changes to your application once you’ve gotten to the next tab.
The nominating institution will review your application and either approve it or return it to you with comments.
It is important to note that, your application will not yet have been forwarded to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program. Only authorized personnel can view submitted applications. Faculties of graduate studies cannot make any changes to your application because they have “read-only” access.
Final Words On Applying For Vanier Scholarship
If the nominating college or university nominates your application, institutional officials will electronically approve and submit your nomination to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship competition.
You will then receive an automated email from ResearchNet confirming that your application was received shortly after the nominating institutions deadline date.
