The United States Presidential Scholarship Program was founded in 1964, by the executive order of the President, to acknowledge and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
In 1979, the program was extended to acknowledge students who has shown exceptional talent in the creative, virtual and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to acknowledge students who has shown the ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.
Each year, the Board of Admissions awards the Presidential Scholarship to the incoming first-year students who has shown exceptional academic achievement. In addition to being among the most academically talented students, presidential Scholars show excellence beyond the walls of the classroom and are leaders in their communities and schools.
The scholarship awards a $25,000 tuition which is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. About 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars yearly, which is one of U.S highest honors for high school students.
The Acceptance Rate For USA Presidential Scholarship
Eligible candidates are invited to apply to the scholarship program in January of their graduation year. Applications are due in February each year.
Semi-finalists are announced in the middle of April and all Scholars are announced the first-week of May. The Program for Nationwide Recognition usually occur in Washington, DC in June.

US Presidential Scholarship Eligibility And Requirements
For the general component of the program, applicants are required to meet the following criteria:
- Applicant is or will be a citizen of the United States, or Legal Permanent United States Residents by the application deadline
Applicants who are not citizens of the United States or Legal Permanent United States Residents on the day they took SAT or ACT exam, or who requested that The College or University Board not release their scores to outside entities.
Such applicant should contact the United States Presidential Scholars Program at 507-931-8345 to make sure their scores are considered in the determination of the candidate pool.
- Applicant must be a graduate or awarded a diploma between January & August of 2023, the current year of program; and
- Score exceptionally well on either the SAT or ACT taken during the year window that starts in September, 2018 and runs through October, 2021.
For the arts component of the program, applicants are required to meet the following criteria:
- Applicant is or will be a citizen of the United States or Legal Permanent United States Residents by the application deadline;
- Applicant must be a graduate or awarded a diploma between January and August of 2023, the current year of program;
- Applicant must have shown academic achievement and talent in the creative, visual and performing arts; and
It is important to note that, Students must enroll and participate in YoungArts, a national program of the National Young Arts Foundation designed to identify, acknowledge and encourage high school seniors with talents who has shown excellence in cinematic arts, dance, design, music, jazz, photography, vocal performance, theater, visual arts or writing.
Based on the discipline entered, applicants must submit videotapes, audiotapes, slides or manuscripts showing artistic accomplishment. 1 panel for each arts discipline accesses applicants in a two step blind adjudication process.
The judges review material submitted by the registrant and select up to twenty award candidates in each of the 10 disciplines for live adjudications in Miami.
YoungArts also has National Merit and Honorable Mention Winners that can attend 1 of 3 Regional Programs in Los Angeles, Florida, New York City and Miami as well.
All applicants are evaluated against a standard of excellence within each artistic discipline, not against one another.
For the CTE component of the program, applicants are required to meet the following criteria:
- Applicant is or will be a citizen of the United States or Legal Permanent United States Residents by the application deadline;
- Applicant must be a graduate or awarded a diploma between January and August of 2023, the current year of program;
- Applicant must have Shown academic achievement and talent in the creative, visual and performing arts; and
- Applicant must be nominated by their state’s Chief State School Officer.
Application for the United States Presidential Scholars Program is strictly by invitation. Students may not apply individually to the scholarship program or be nominated.
Requirements
- High School Senior (Fresher 2023 Fall)
- Must have a minimum of 3.5 CGPA and 1200 SAT (Critical Reading + Math) or 25 composite ACT
- ACT/SAT requirements are waived for applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.85 and above
- Must apply for admission to desired University and submit all official transcripts and test scores.

- Submit duly completed Presidential Scholarship Application Form
- Submit a well written Presidential Scholarship Essay Form
- Attend Official Campus (either in-person or virtual)
- Any attended visit between January 1, 2023 to December 1, 2023 will be considered for the Scholarship
Application Deadline
The 2021-22 application is now closed. Information on the 2023-23 application will be made available in August 2023.
However, students should note the following dates from the previous year of application:
- Presidential Scholarship Application and Essay Form became available on the 2nd of August, 2021.
- All materials for application mentioned in the application instructions (including campus visit) was duly completed and submitted on the 1st of December, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. No exceptions was be made.
