The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation (CSTF) is a non-profit organization which has been committed to bringing higher education within the reach of families in Canada. The foundation has been helping over 800,000 Canadians achieve their post-secondary school dreams.
The Foundation began with a group of 6 like-minded people in 1960 who shared one common goal—that everyone in Canada should have the financial resources to pursue post-secondary education.
The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation (CSTF) supports the pursuit of higher education via financial aid and partnerships with learning-focused community organizations. The CSTF has helped over 600,000 families access post-secondary education in Canada since 1960.
The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation believe that education has the power to change lives and communities and is passionate about helping families achieve higher learning.
The CSTF provides financial support to Canadian students through bursaries and awards, assisting students to reach post-secondary learning opportunities. This year the foundation is set to deliver $250,000 worth of bursaries and awards to students pursuing higher education.
The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation offers two types of awards to students:
- Bursary Awards
- Founders Awards
Canadian Scholarship Trust Bursary Awards
The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation (CSTF) provides bursaries to students of all age who are entering postsecondary education for the first time and whose financial needs may make it hard for them to access higher learning.
This year, the foundation is offering 7 CSTF Directors for the students’ Bursaries and 18 CSTF Champions’ Bursaries, making it a total of 25 bursaries, each value is $6,000 for every student.
The bursary eligibility criteria, amounts and application processes are the same for both groups in the Canadian scholarship. Students who are interested in applying for the CSTF bursaries need only to apply once to be considered for both bursaries in a Canadian college or university.
The Bursary awards can be used to cover tuition-fee as well as school-related expenses such as living expenses or books and supplies. When making the selection, preference will be given to the first student pursuing post-secondary education in a family.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Canadian Scholarship Trust Bursary Awards, Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of Canada or permanent resident/refugee in Canada
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have successfully completed high-school level education
- Be registered in a Post-secondary Education program at an eligible institution in Canada
Eligible Post-secondary Education institutions include trades certificate or apprenticeship or diploma; college, CEGEP or other non-university diploma or certificate; university diploma or certificate below bachelor level; or a university degree.
Application Requirements And Process
Candidates are expected to submit their applications through an online application portal. Although the specific requirements are likely to be changed annually, the core components of an application always include:
- Current high-school transcript
- Admission decision letter (if available) from an eligible post-secondary institution in Canada showing acceptance to the school for the following academic year
- A personal statement about the student’s financial need
- One reference letter
- One short essay question

Canadian Scholarship Trust Founder’s Awards
The Canadian Scholarship Trust Founders’ Awards were designed in honour of 5 individuals who were instrumental in creating and establishing the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation – Arthur Pigott, Peter Wright, Gladys Neale, Rowland Lloyd and Kenneth Carter.
These awards support CST’s Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) beneficiaries who have already completed an initial post-secondary program and are looking to further their education through another post-secondary program.
The funds can be used to cover tuition fees and other school-related expenses such as the cost of living or books and supplies.
The awards are for students who show financial need, and whose financial need may make it hard for them to continue their studies. When making the selection, preference will be given to the first student pursuing post-secondary education in a family.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Canadian Scholarship Trust Founder’s Awards, Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of Canada or permanent resident in Canada
- Be a Canadian Scholarship Trust beneficiary who has received all of his/her Canadian Scholarship Trust Plan Education Assistance Payments
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have graduated from an eligible post-secondary institution (diploma or degree)
- Be registered or will register into another degree/diploma program at a qualifying post-secondary institution in Canada to continue his/her education
- Not have received the CST Founder’s Award before.
